Visit Ostia antica safely!


Here is everything you need to know to visit ancient Ostia safely.

Opening days

The archaeological area of Ostia Antica is open from Tuesday to Sunday. The daily timetable follows the normal timetables which can be consulted on the dedicated page.


Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office from Tuesday to Sunday.

Only electronic payment is allowed, no cash payment. If you prefer, you can buy your ticket online, with advanced payment (by this way it's not necessaty to go to ticket office before entering into the archaelogical area).

Ticket price, reductions and free tickets remained unchanged: you can consult them on the timetables and fares page.

Guided tours and facilities

The guided tours organized and managed by the Concessionaire are currently suspended, therefore it is not possible to book them.

Audioguides, bookshop, cafeteria and wardrobe are not available at the moment.

Protective devices and rules of conduct

At the entrance you will be provided with a brochure containing all the necessary information. From 1st may 2022 it's raccomanded the use of a protective mask inside the cultural sites.

Safety distance

Always keep the safety distance of at least one meter from other people. In some places along the visit route, you will also find special signs that remind you that gatherings are prohibited, but in any case the distance of at least one meter must always be kept, starting from the ticket office, at the passage to the turnstiles and once you enter the archaeological area. On the ground, in front of the ticket office, you will find horizontal signs that will help you to calculate the distance from those in front of you.


Along the way you can find drinking water fountains. Next to them there are hand sanitizer columns. Sanitize your hands if you need it, but don't abuse it, in respect of all the other visitors.

Changes to the visit itinerary

In order to avoid gatherings as much as possible and to allow to keep the safety distance between people, the visit path of the archaeological area of ​​ancient Ostia undergoes some changes.

Forced and alternate routes

Within the archaeological area of ​​Ostia Antica some obligatory routes have been identified for some monuments, in order to avoid that people can cross or touch each other involuntarily. Always respecting the distancing between people, the following mandatory paths have been identified:

  • Theater and Piazzale delle Corporazioni
  • Thermopolio of the way of the House of Diana
  • “Piccolo Mercato”
  • Path from the Bath of Buticosus to the Domus of Cupid and Psyche
  • Bath of the Forum
  • Building of Serapis, Terme dei Sette Sapienti, Building of Charioteers

The following alternating one-way paths were also identified:

  • Porta Romana
  • Porta Marina
  • Porta Laurentina

It is recommended to follow scrupulously the directions indicated by the signs: these obligatory routes have been designed precisely to avoid as many occasions as possible, even involuntary gathering.

The Ostiense Museum

With the reopening to the public, the Ostiense Museum remains closed. The renovation of the building will begin very soon with the consequent rearrangement of the works in its rooms.

Organized groups accompanied by guides

Organized groups accompanied by tour guides are allowed on the condition that they ensure social distancing and an orderly visit method, right from the entrance to the park, avoiding any form of assembly. During the visit of the archaeological area of ancient Ostia, all the above rules must be respected.

Use of the toilets

One person may access the toilet at a time. We recommend each person to pay attention to the rules for proper hand cleaning in the interest of safeguarding everyone's health.
